Nasopharyngeal airway
The primary function is to keep the patient’s airway open by creating a patent channel from the nostril to the oropharynx, allowing airflow even if the tongue falls back.EMTs can use a nasopharyngeal airway (NPA), together with lubricant, to help maintain airway patency.Because an NPA does not trigger the gag reflex, it can be used in semi‑conscious and unconscious patients.
Size: 28 Fr (diameter 9.3 mm)
Material: PVC
Steps for use:
1. Open the airway.
2. With the concave side down, measure from the tip of the nose to the earlobe and choose the longest NPA that fits comfortably in the nostril.
3. Apply lubricant.
4. Lift the tip of the nose and select the larger nostril.
5. Insert vertically with the concave side down. Do not force if you feel obstruction.
This is not an official instruction sheet; the device should only be used by personnel with professional training.
Caution: In patients with suspected basilar skull fracture, avoid inserting the NPA toward the cranial cavity.
